YEAR ‘ROUND

JOIN THE FLAG COMMITTEE and keep this program running smoothly and successfully!  The income from this program ensures the ORHS Band program can stay competitive in our Area – without increasing the annual Fair Share Fee!

We need:

  1. Data Entry Volunteers – 1 hr / wk most months; 5 hr / wk (or more) during renewal season June / July
  2. Email Monitors – 1 hr / wk most months; 1 hr / day (or more) pre and post any flag holiday
  3. Holiday Support Team – Passout and record routes at storage; Ensure all routes are placed prior to each holiday; This task could take most of one weekend, you would not be responsible for every holiday
  4. Flag Placement Volunteers – every student / family is asked to participate twice a year. Many families choose to help the band and honor their country by helping at every holiday (there are 6). Each volunteer is responsible for at least one route (approx 30 flags) – placement for the holiday and pick up after – always return your route sheet with your flags!

Flags with Pride is not a program that can be run by one parent, one family or one band section – it takes ALL of us at some point in the year, to share the work and reap the benefit.

Hello Parents,

Moving on….. Goodbye Marching Band, hello Region Band Auditions and Concert Season and Winter Guard!

While Concert Season doesn’t require the same time commitment (from the parents) as Marching, there are still plenty of jobs to do.

Winter Guard DEFINITELY will provide lots of opportunities for moms and dads to help! These ladies are just getting started on their year and have a full competitive performance season ahead.

THIS WEEK:

Mid week placement is not easy, but could not be avoided this month. Hello Parents,

Looks like we made it!

Congratulations on reaching the end of your first (or fourth!) marching band season. Senior students and parents, thanks for the many friendships and support you have given to your fellow musicians and their parents. The ORHS Band made great advances this year, because you shared your knowledge and provided excellent leadership. YOU WILL BE MISSED!

******

Special thanks this week to – SAN ANTONIO BOA Contest Volunteers – from the crack of dawn to the dark of night and a pretty warm day in between – THANK YOU for sacrificing an entire Saturday to ensure our band had everything they needed to be their VERY BEST!

AND

Thank you for a new tradition – the ORHS BAND SPIRIT CREW! I can tell you first hand  (as I was chaperoning a bus) that your students LOVED the sendoff at the high school and were so impressed that their parents would be standing in the dark, on the side of the road, at 6:30 in the morning, just for them! The shiny signs and raucous cheers that filled the Alamodome let our band, AND everyone else in the stadium, know how proud we are of these incredible kids!

(P.S. the goodie bags were a huge hit too – thanks section moms and dads!)

*******

FLAG ALERT – we knew this holiday would be a challenge, our amazing band families placed most of the flags on Wednesday, more went out on Thursday and Friday. WE STILL HAVE 6 ROUTES TO PLACE!

Benders Landing – Rt 7 & 15

White Oak Estates – Rt 1A, 1B & 2

Legends Estates – Rt 2

If you are a HORN or CLARINET – THIS WAS YOUR HOLIDAY! – If you did not place a route, you still have a chance to fulfill your responsibility

*******

WHAT’S NEXT? (…….you may be asking) Things definitely slow down a bit, but there is plenty of help needed as we transition into Concert Band and Winter Guard Season. Volunteers needed as stated below – sign ups in Charms.

Nov 11 – Veterans Day Program at Moorehead Stadium

Nov 14 – Concert Uniform Fitting – WE NEED VOLUNTEERS FOR THIS – 3 volunteers – 11am – 1pm

We want YOU as a Board Member or Committee Lead!

Dear War Eagle Band!   Congratulations on an OUTSTANDING marching season!!!!!!   The season came to end yesterday at the Bands of America Super Regional Contest and we are so proud of the performance that the band gave.   It was the absolute best performance of the season…..and the crowd and judges loved it.    There were 64 bands competing in the two day festival and it has been nicknamed the Texas Grand National Championships because of the level of bands who compete.   We are so excited to announce that the War Eagle Band placed higher than we ever have at this contest.   We were 15th in our class and 17th overall….with a 1.2 point difference between 17th and 14th place which would have placed us in finals.    The 3 music judges had us in 6th place!!!!   So we could not be happier with the way the season ended!!!!!!   All of your hard work, dedication and preparation has been rewarded with a record setting season for this band program.   On behalf of the all of the directors and staff…we are so PROUD of each and everyone of you.   You represent the best of Oak Ridge High School and we are so lucky to get to work with you everyday!!!!!!

Dear War Eagle Band….What an incredible week it has been.   It started with the War Eagle Band making a Sweepstakes rating at Region UIL Marching contest on Tuesday.  Next traveling to a football game on Thursday and finally competing at Area UIL marching contest on Saturday.  Saturday was a great day for marching band and it was amazing to see the level of musicianship, artistry and creativity that the bands in our Area are achieving.  The War Eagle band qualified for the Area Finals and  that evening our kids marched their BEST show to date!   It was incredible and we the directors cannot express how proud we are of our students.

It was an emotional performance and you could see and feel the determination and the pride that our students performed with.   When the evening was over, the War Eagle Band placed 8th, and although we do not get to advance to the State marching contest.. our performance that evening was truly and inspiring one…and one that we, the directors, will never forget.   We are SO proud of our students and how far they have come.  You are amazing young people and we are so fortunate to get to work with you ever day.

On behalf of the students and directors, we also want to thank our parents….you are an incredible group of people.   Thank you for your spirit efforts this past week…from volunteering at our UIL contest, to decorating the band hall, providing spirit days, and those FABULOUS SIGNS!!!!!  Your support means everything to us…THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
