THIS WEEK IN BAND BOOSTERS! 9/3/18

Hello War Eagle Band Boosters & Happy Labor Day! Hope you are able to rest & enjoy this much needed rain & cooler temperatures. We had a very successful first football game & halftime show this past Friday. Also, what an exciting opportunity to watch the Texas Tech Red Raider Marching Band perform a special exhibition show for us after the game–WOW! They looked and sounded amazing!
Now on to the upcoming events and information for this week.

1ST FOOTBALL GAME A SUCCESS:
Thanks to ALL the parent volunteers who came together to make our first football game successful! From coordinating the pre-game meals, passing out the meals, helping with the students hair-do’s,
chaperones helping keep control in the stands, pit crew helping with equipment, and our very own “voice of the War Eagle Band” announcing at half time! It’s amazing what we can do when we focus on our students and put their needs as priority #1!

PROPER HAIR CARE PROCEDURES FOR GAME DAY/MARCHING CONTESTS:
Due to the change in uniform requirements this marching season, the students will no longer be wearing the hats with plumes for halftime shows or marching contests. Your students should already be aware of this, but girls must wear their long hair in a “sock bun” and guys must “slick back” their hair to all be in unison.  There are several good hair gel products the guys can use, just not recommended to use any “sticky” gels like Gorilla gel. Please note, the uniform crew is selling the sock buns for $2, if your student does not already own one. You may want to have extras just in case. Also, bobby pins and hair ties are suggested. The chaperones will have extras on hand at football games & contests, but it’s always recommended that your students are prepared.

CHECK OUT THE ORHS BAND FACEBOOK PAGE:
Thanks to Brad Walton for uploading 100+ photos from the first football game! Go check out all the great photos and memories our students have already begun to make! @orhsbandtx

1ST FLAG HOLIDAY WAS A SUCCESS:
Our Flag Committee would like to give a GIANT round of applause to all who turned out this past Saturday to help place flags! By 11am Sat morning, all 97 routes were picked put & being placed throughout our community! WAY TO GO!! Please note, we will be leaving the flags out for 2 weeks, in observance of Labor Day & Patriots Day. Flag return will be Sat Sept 15 8am-11am. Please be sure to keep route sheets in a safe place and notate any concerns on the sheets when you turn them in on the 15th with the neatly rolled flags. Please sign up in Charms for Flag return if you haven’t already done so. Any questions? Please contact Melissa Lunkwitz & our flag committee. orhsbandflags@gmail.com

SNAP RAISE FUNDRAISER ENDING SOON/MATTRESS FUNDRAISER SEPT 22:
Please be sure you are spreading the word about Snap Raise and our Mattress Fundraisers NOW!
We only have 3 days left for Snap Raise, and we need at least 77\\\\\\\% participation so our profit percentage can be higher! Also the ORHS Band Mattress Fundraiser is set for Sat Sept 22 from 10am-5pm in the ORHS Cafeteria. Please mark your calendars now! We need all parents & students to participate for this to be a successful event!

PAVILION UPDATE-STILL NEED VOLUNTEERS TO SIGN UP:
Please log into Charms and check the volunteer availability for upcoming concerts. Thanks to the white shirts for keeping this important fundraiser going strong, but we still have lots of opportunities for parents to volunteer and earn those points! Especially for Majic Under the Stars and BuzzFEST in October! Please contact the white shirt crew if any questions. orhsbandpavilion@gmail.com

SPIRIT YARD SIGNS  & STADIUM SIGNS AVAILABLE FOR PICKUP THURS SEPT 6TH:
If you ordered a yard sign or stadium sign, they can be picked up this Thursimmediately following the Full Band practice through the end of the varsity marching practice. Distribution will end shortly after the varsity band is finished with practice. Please contact Vicky Roberts if any questions.   orhsbandspirit@gmail.com

CHARMS STATEMENTS TO GO OUT THIS WEEK:
Please keep an eye on your student’s account in Charms, as the Disney trips have been added for those who turned in the contract. Also remember that Fair Share fees must be paid in full in order to be eligible for Disney trip. Also note, Pavilion points earned through Aug 29th have been added to fees. The Guard Report 8/26/18

Rise UP War Eagle Nation – It’s Game Time!
Are you ready for some FOOTBALL?!?!?!
Here’s a bit of good-to-know info —
1. The first football game is this Friday 8/31 @ Woodforest Bank Stadium. All tickets are $8 at the gate.
2. Sister gifts – just a token of sisterly affection, no need to spend lots of money ($10 MAX limit). Can be anything homemade or store bought that goes along with the theme of the week. Be creative! Sister gifts are given only at HOME games.
Friday 8/31 – Surviving Guard…things to help get you through a late night game like extra bobby pins, chips, candy, hair ties, make-up wipes, lip balm, etc.
Friday 9/21 – Beat the Heat… Anything summer related like sunglasses, pocket fans, sunscreen, summer scented lotion, water squirt toys, etc.
Friday 10/21 – Favorite Things… Customize to your sister’s favorites list
Saturday 10/27 Travel Kit … Road trip accessories like sleep mask, travel pillows, blankies, ear buds, puzzle and or coloring books, etc.
Friday 11/9 Winter Cold… It can get chilly out there (believe it or not it’s happened). Anything winter related like mittens, ear muffs, scarves, fuzzy socks, blankies, etc.
3. Homecoming is Friday 10/12. A small traditional mum is worn with their uniforms for the homecoming game. The mums are custom made and are coordinated to match one another. The cost of the mum is $10.00 and can be paid with cash to be given to Alysha Allgood, Social Officer, or may be paid via a cash app provided by Mrs. Nikohl Allgood, Guard Mom.
These mums are distributed to the girls on game day. Individualized mums can be worn during the school day but are not allowed once they are in uniform.
4. Football games are FUN but the Guard has a job to do. The girls are not allowed to leave their section to sit or visit with family, go the concession stand or buy spirit gear. Only the directors and chaperones are allowed in the cordoned off “band section”. Chaperones also have a very important job to do – they are tasked with keeping all of the band/guard students and their equipment safe. Please keep this in mind when you see them in the stands.
5. Game Nights are often LATE nights. Once the buses arrive back at the school, the girls are responsible for putting away their equipment and changing out of the uniforms BEFORE they are dismissed. You will be given an estimated time of arrival to the school but they do need time to complete their responsibilities before they are able to leave. Please plan accordingly.
6. There’s lots of opportunities to get involved – game day committees and chaperoning. Sign up in CHARMS! Don’t forget to go to the CISD website and complete the background check prior to signing up. It’s free and results are usually back within a day or two. There’s still time to get it done before the first game day this Friday.

Color Guard Rehearsal schedule for this week
Monday – Flag Line rehearsal 3:15 – 5:15pm
Tuesday – Varsity rehearsal 4:15 – 6:45pm – SLT meeting during Eagle’s Nest
Wednesday – Rifle Line rehearsal 3:15 – 5:15pm
Thursday – Varsity rehearsal 3:15 – 5:45pm
Friday – Game Day – home v. Dawson – Pep Rally during Eagle’s Nest – you must have your pep rally shirt

THE GUARD REPORT 8/5/18

Hope everyone is having a fabulous weekend.  Week 1 of summer band camp is in the books!  They’ve put in A LOT of hard work under the sizzling Texas sun and certainly return home exhausted.  Here’s a couple of things we can do to help them keep the momentum going …

  • Keep a reasonable bedtime and get a full night’s sleep.
  • Start out the day with a protein packed breakfast.
  • Prefill their jug with water or … as the girls say “WATER WATER H2O –  Dehydration NO NO NO”
  • Pack healthy lunches and snacks – example: meats, cheeses, fruits and nuts
  • Remind them to reapply sunscreen throughout the day

Moving on to week #2 – It’s SPIRIT WEEK!!  Please encourage your daughter to participate. The more guard girls who dress up the more points they earn for Band Olympics.  And the GUARD wants to GO for GOLD!!! There’s no need to go out and spend a lot of money on costumes.  Use what you have at home, be creative, and have fun.

Meme Monday – catch phrases, popular melodies, and generally trending things all count.

Twin Tuesday – You and a partner dress alike

Walt Disney Wednesday – Dress like your favorite Disney character.

Tacky Tourist Thursday – Go on a mini vacation and become a tourist – example: fanny pack, straw hats, disposable camera, Hawaiian shirts.

Fun Fact Friday – Tell us something about yourself that many may not know – example: like to wear mismatch socks, Wear whole outfit in your favorite color, like to run around the house wearing a cape.

Note: costume items must not prohibit their ability to perform/practice.

  2. Flags With Pride program has been extended through August 12th. Go online @ orhsband.org/product/flag-subscription

Lastly, I want to say THANK YOU to all who so promptly responded to our plea for help getting in the uniform payments.  We have received several payments and the Charms accounts are currently being updated. Although we haven’t reached the 100\% mark, we are making progress.  If you have not yet had a chance to pay the uniform fee – Please, Please, Please do before the end of this week.

Looking forward to seeing you all on Tuesday evening.

The Guard Report 7/29/18

Welcome back War Eagle Color Guard parents! This is going to be an exciting and very busy marching season.  I can’t wait to see what our girls have in store of us this year and it all begins…TOMORROW – bright and early at 7am.

So, let’s get started…

First and foremost, I would like to say welcome to our new guard girls Allison, Averie, Bella, Caitlyn, Chloe, Jaen, Journey, Kenia, Lillian, Lilly, Linda, Phoenix, Savannah, Valeria, Mercedes, Zykia and their parents  – we are so very happy to have you!

You should have all received this season’s first “THIS WEEK IN BAND” email from Ms. P earlier this afternoon. If you have not, please let me know so we can get it to you ASAP as it is the “key” to staying informed.  I strongly encourage you all to look forward to and read Ms. P’s email  every Sunday. It is where you will find all of your “need to know” information for the upcoming week including any schedule or event changes/updates and the “Color Guard Corner” which is info specific to guard.

OK, I’ve attempted and failed miserably to come up with a catchy title for the section of this email for information Mr. Landers would like posted. The best I could come up with is the “Lowdown from Landers” (so any suggestions are greatly appreciated)

  1. Practices for the week of 07/30-08/04 begin at 7:00 am – please have your student there @ 6:45am in time to be fully prepared and organized to start at 7:00am.  M-F rehearsals end at 4:30pm and Saturday at 12:00pm. Please understand that these are the end times for rehearsals not pick-up times. The students are responsible for packing up and storing their gear before they are dismissed to leave. Please allow time for them to complete their duties.
  2. Rehearsal Checklist – items aremandatory
  • Practice attire

o   Light blue practice shirt

o   Athletic shorts (not too short!)

o   Hat and/or bandana

o   Socks

o   Tennis/athletic shoes that lace up

  • Sunscreen – will need to be re-applied throughout the day
  • Sunglasses
  • Water jug – ½ gallon or gallon. *facilities are available for refill as needed but MUST COME PREFILLED with WATER nothing else.
  • Lunch and snacks for breaks (x2) – Students are not allowed to leave the premises for lunch
  • Dot book (3”x5” index card spiral notebook) with some type of lanyard/shoestring/cord so it can be worn on the body.
  • Hair ties, etc. to pull up hair up out of face and off of neck.
  1. Week 2 practice schedule has been adjusted to accommodate time with the guard choreographer, Mr. Sperling. Revised schedule for Aug 7-8-9 will be9am to 4pmindoor rehearsal with Mr. Sperling. Dinner break 4pm to 5pm. Full Band rehearsal 5pm to 8pm.
  2. Something new this year –Saturdayrehearsals AND a couple of football games have been added to our already busy contest schedule. Please keep this in mind when making weekend plans from now through the end of October/early November.
  3. Picture day isTuesday August 14 8am to noon. Group and individual pictures in uniform will be taken and available for ordering. Order forms will be provided prior to picture day.
  4. Uniform/dress fees for this marching season are now due. If you have not done so already, please do so in Charms as listed under fixed payments.

Booster Business

  1. Interested in working the Pavilion to help with the Fair Share and Trip fees? It’s not too late.Contact orhsbandpavilion@gmail.com for more info.
  2. Tuesday August 7thBooster Club meeting for ALL parents 6:30pm – 8pm
  3. SNAPP fundraiser kick-off is August 9th. It’s an easy way for the girls to fundraise – all that’s required is a list of 10+ emails per student. Now’s a good time to start reaching out to family, friends, and local businesses.
  4. Guard mom help needed. We’re looking for a few volunteers to complete our wash crew and hair team.  Nikohl Allgood and I will be available at the Aug 7th booster meeting if you are interested and would like more details.

Guard Mom note – The dresses are mostly white. For this reason, we strongly suggest* an addition to the uniform. “Panteez” female protective leak resistant undergarments are available on Amazon.com. Game days and contest days are very hectic, break times are limited, and sometimes unfortunately we don’t make it to the ladies room in time.

*not a requirement

Looking forward to a spectacular season!

THIS WEEK IN BAND BOOSTERS! 7/29/18

Hello War Eagle Band Boosters! We hope you & your students are enjoying your Sunday, on this
“Eve of Summer Marching Band”! We are excited to start this school year off on a POSITIVE NOTE, and we look forward in helping our students have an exceptionally successful experience!
Parents, please read these weekly emails carefully, along with Mrs. P’s emails, so that you & your students are up to date and aware of upcoming events/information!! We welcome our freshman & new students & parents to our program, and hope you find a place in our organization to volunteer and help in some capacity! We have an amazing group of parents who know that if we work hard & work together, our students will reap the benefits!
So here we go!

GEAR PICKUP A SUCCESS ON SATURDAY JULY 28:
Thanks to all of the parent volunteers & Student leaders who came out to help with gear pickup, and a HUGE thanks to Julie Christensen for all of her hard work ordering & organizing the gear!
Your students should have everything they need to get started on their marching journey!
If you were not able to pick up gear, there will be time tomorrow after practice to pick it up. Be sure that the gear has been paid.  Any questions, feel free to email Julie. orhsbandgear@gmail.com

SUMMER BAND STARTS AT 7AM MONDAY JULY 30:
Parents, please be sure to have your students to the ORHS band hall and ready to go for marching practice tomorrow morning BEFORE 7am.  The rehearsals start fast and furious, so you do not want to just be pulling into the parking lot at 7:00 or 7:10. Also be sure your student is prepared for marching practice, such as water jug filled with water only, hat, sunglasses, athletic/tennis shoes, socks, practice shirt, sunscreen, a healthy lunch with snacks, instrument, music, dot book, etc.
It’s gonna be a BUSY BUT FUN TIME!

PAVILION CONCERTS ARE IN FULL SWING-LOTS OF OPPORTUNITIES:
A big thank you to the white shirt committee and parents who have volunteered so far this summer to help our pavilion program be successful. We still have many concerts for the upcoming months, so there is still plenty of opportunities to sign up and earn points! Any questions or concerns, please email our white shirt crew.  orhsbandpavilion@gmail.com

FIRST BAND BOOSTER MEETING TUES AUG 7TH:
Please mark your calendars & plan to attend our first booster meeting this year! You will have fun & get to mingle with fellow band/color guard parents! You will receive lots of information regarding opportunities to get plugged in and volunteer! Also, door prizes and snacks will be provided, so you definitely do not want to miss out! Looking forward to seeing you there!

Thank you parents for all you do to help our program. It is an honor and privilege to be part of such an awesome group of like-minded parents who truly want nothing but the best for our students!
Please continue to communicate and stay in contact with your fellow band/color guard parents, band directors, booster board members, committee members, etc.
And….GO WAR EAGLE BAND!
